Germany allows eligible foreign nationals to obtain permanent residence through a Settlement Permit (Niederlassungserlaubnis). Unlike temporary residence permits, permanent residence generally has no expiry date and provides unrestricted access to the German labour market. Eligibility depends on the applicant's residence history, type of residence permit, financial independence, pension contributions where applicable, adequate living accommodation, sufficient German language skills and compliance with integration requirements. Shorter qualifying periods may apply to certain categories, including EU Blue Card holders. Permanent residence provides greater long-term security but does not confer German citizenship. Permanent residents remain citizens of their original country unless they later acquire German nationality under applicable law.
